This painting is a direct representation of “Fragmentary colossal marble head of a youth” Greek, Hellenistic period, 2nd century B.C.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC

The quote below is taken directly from the museums curator.

“The youth, with long curling locks and a brooding expression, was originally part of a draped bust set into a marble roundel almost four feet in diameter. It is probably among the earliest known sculptures of this type in marble and over life-size in scale. It would have been one of several that adorned the walls of a particular grand space in the gymnasium of ancient Pergamon. He may represent a young god or possibly Alexander the Great.”

Throughout history and today works of art are torn down, defaced, and destroyed. I like to bring attention to that part of our history and and wonder under what conditions will we ever stop the cycle. I respect the beauty and poetry in the fragments. Im glad we have broken pieces to help us understand our stories from the past and come to terms with it.
